Wickerman

wickerman
A couple of years back I was working on a horror game where we were attempting to come up with new and horrific boss encounters.
I was a big fan of the original “Wickerman” movie and had recently come across some fantastic photos of real wickermen.
I played around with the idea that these are massive effigies built from dead trees brought to life by dark magic.

This was a quick conceptual/mood piece done in SBP.

Joker

joker
A few years back we were approached by WB to develop a new take on The Joker for a video game.
We played around with a dark malevolent, homicidal Joker- my favorite from his various DC interpretations.
This piece was used in the design pitch. This was all pre- “dark knight” movies. Happy

This was a quick ink sketch using SBP.

The Kraken

Kraken
While coming up with ideas for bosses in a horror game, I developed the idea of a Kraken attacking a ship on which you were a passenger.
The idea was unrealistic based on our limitations; but I got to paint it anyway.

This was painted in SBP referencing some great photos of octopus and old ships that I found online.
I wanted the palette to have a stormy and almost ”other-wordly” quality to it and so played around with the colours.
I do feel that I hit the airbrush a zoom a little too much...

Rik

Rik
Early on while designing a horror game I recently worked on we toyed around with what the hero could look like.
This guy was one of my first takes on him.
I found some awesome body builder reference online. The wrench just seemed to make sense- he is supposed to be homicidal.

Once again I used SBP, alternating from fat brushes and the airbrush tool and even a pencil.

Slaughterhouse

Slaughterhouse
An environment idea for the horror game I worked on last year.
The premise is a slaughterhouse surrounded by a shanty town. The combination and proximity to one another seemed really creepy.

I used SBP.

New Rik

newrik
Main character design for a game that I recently worked on.
I think I got a little obsessed with his damaged arm.
The idea behind the "guts" in his hand, is that he would rip parts off of an enemy and use it against them....
This was done entirely in SBP. I used reference from various cuts of meat, a “hulk” statue, & a hockey mask.

Shanty town

Shanty
Quick ink sketch that I did for the horror game I worked on last year. The Shanty town surrounds a slaughterhouse...
I used SBP using a couple of thin to thick brushes. I referenced shanty towns and industrial buildings.

Body Boss

bodyboss
This guy was a concept I had for a horror game that I was working on.
The final boss was created out of all of the bodies of your victims coming together to form a giant.
A giant made out of dead bodies...

The Fallen

Fallen
I was just messing around with this painting. trying new stuff. A dark take on the scales of justice.
I found some great reference of a skeleton posed with fake wings, messed with it’s colors and then painted this guy.

I used SBP.

Another concept piece for the “Silent hill” pitch.

Another trap

Bombed out
Another piece from my “Silent Hill” pitch.
The devastated post apocalyptic wasteland of “The warren” offers traps for unsuspecting children.
However kids are smart and fight back by banding together and posting warnings to each other,

I found great reference of bombed out buildings to use for this illustration.

sanctuary?

tunnel
A piece from the “Silent Hill” pitch I did.
In the world of “The Warren” children had to use their wits to determine traps from safety.

When I was a kid I would play near train tunnels like this one.
They always scared the hell out of me and so I thought that it would take some serious nerves to enter one- even if it proclaims itself as sanctuary.
The snow just made it creepier.

Burning man

Burningman
This was a “Boss” idea for a horror game that I recently came up with.
Starting out as a gargantuan Wickerman the creature would stride across the landscape hunting the player.
As the player damaged him he would erupt in flame becoming even more ferocious before burning up and collapsing.

I found some great reference of burning wood & bonfires as well as Wickermen.
Shame the game sucked. Winking

Magistrate General

Magistrate general
Concept that I was developing for a friend for a game/comic.
The Magistrate General is a supernatural character I created who would hunt down escaped slaves...

I used SBP.

Romans Vs Alien

RomansVsAlien
This image started out as an idea I had for the "Aliens" franchise. A Roman legion hunting and battling what they believe to be a dragon who is terrorizing the countryside. The Romans were highly organized proficient fighters and I felt that they might stand a chance against an alien queen. Well maybe...

I think i overworked the image, and relied way too much on the airbrush and zoom tool. It took me way too long to finish this painting, and although I like the image I do feel it would have benefited from being loose. I have a tendency to overwork my stuff, and push back against this when possible.

I used Sketchbook pro for the illustration but also messed around with the temperature in photoshop.

Hellboy

God I love Mignola’s work.
This started out as a spontaneous sketch using a new package I had discovered called “Tablet Draw”. It is a great little drawing program with a really nice Ink pen.

Hellboy beating on a Robo-ape. Yup, sounds about right.
